The Hymettus Mountain towers over the basin of Attica and is of special interest to mountain hikers. The fact that it is so close to the center of Athens, its rich vegetation, the never ending changes of its natural scenery and also its cultural heritage due to the presence of the Byzantine monasteries it has, make it an ideal choice for a one-day hiking trip.

The journey starts from the pit of Asteriou Monastery and hikers get through a beautiful, pine-covered area 1.2 km long, with a slope of about 180 meters to reach the GSM base.

From here on, it mildly ascends towards north and after 1.5 km, with the scenery continuously changing and the vegetation becoming more dissipated, it gets to the first crossroad. Choosing the north-eastern track the hikers will cross an area with clumps of arbutus trees and then get to the first stop of the trip, the Lion’s Cave by means of a path surrounded by low vegetation.

From there they will have the chance to admire the view towards the sea, and through a forest path that goes north they will get to another forest path which will take them to the north-west part of the Hymettus Mountain, and from that spot, there is a panoramic view towards the basin of Attica.

The path starts descending and after 2 km hiking into the forests it will get to its final destination – the Byzantine Monastery of Saint John the Hunter (12th to 13th century) Time of Year This trail can be done from February to November. In summer and especially during July and August, the hikers need to be careful as temperatures often go higher than 30 C

some signs missing here and there, so you will have with you the notes we have enclosed.

For this trip, you do not need any particular hiking equipment with you. Just wear the proper,
mountain wise clothes and shoes, according to the weather conditions and the time of the year.

How it works
It is very simple. We will take you from your hotel to the point where the trail starts. There you
will get all the printed material that has been sent to you at the moment of your booking (maps,
route notes, etc.). There will be a short briefing for the last instructions, we answer any
questions you might have, then you get your refreshment box and you are ready to go!
During your hiking, we will be available for any help you might need and at the end of your hike
we will be there to take you back to your hotel.
