OVERVIEW

Nemea is located 120km away from Athens, and many visitors call this area  "Tuscany of Greece". On this trip, we will walk next to vineyards, and we will reach the peak “Kourkoula” with the beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. This peak, according to mythology, was the area where the goddess Hera grew up.

Then we will visit a winery where we will be introduced to the secrets of wine production and where we will taste quality wine of local varieties with a lavish meal next to the river Asopos.

On our return we will make a short stop at Loutraki where everyone will be free to enjoy a walk or a coffee by the sea and why not a quick dive!

Highlights

  • The view of Nemea's vineyards
  • Winery visit
  • Lunch at the bank of Asopos river
  • Enjoy the sea at Loutraki

TRIP INFO

About Route

Length: 9,8 km
Flat walking: 2,6km
Ascent length: 3,2km
Descent length: 4,0km
Duration(approximately): 2hours 30min

Difficulty 2/5

We set off from the mountain vineyards in the direction of the village pass. From there we have an excellent view of the quiet valley of Nemea with its abundant vineyards and the Mycenean centre of Aidonia.

We ascend to the right to find ourselves on the small plateau of St. Athanasios and climb at the summit of Kourkoula. The view is magical. We can see the magnificent summit of Ziria – the second highest mountain of the Peloponesse – and Corinthia to our East, Argolid and the mountain Pharmaka to the south. This is where Temenos, the son of patriarch Pelasgos, brought up goddess Hera, the protector of women. Remnants of the Pelasgian walls and wild pears keep us company all the way to the chapel of St. Theodoroi, which is a continuation of the early Christian monastery of the same name. The large stones from the Pellasgian walls are visible, as well as architectural components of the original temple, probably devoted to goddess Hera.

At the foot of the mountain, we are welcomed by a small waterfall feeding into Asopos river, the distributor of the water of Lake Stymphalia. Walking Eastwards on the banks of the waterfall, we discern remnants of the old bridge of Handrians’s Aqueduct and, through the vineyards, we reach the southern entrance to the village, where the picturesque Katou Vrisi welcomes us with its fresh water.
